Hammocks

I have not yet used a backpacking hammock, such as the Warbonnet Outdoors Blackbird ($160, 25 oz) or the Hennessy Hammock Ultralight A-Sym Classic ($200, 31 oz), so my knowledge is admittedly limited. But I would like to test one out soon. These two glowing reviews I found were typical: “[My hammock] offers, quite simply, the most restful and comfortable sleep I’ve ever had in the backcountry.” And, “This single piece of gear has totally revolutionized my backpacking experience.”

There are three important differences between a backpacking hammock and a traditional banana-shaped backyard hammock. First, the former feature an asymmetric cut that flattens the sleeping position, to almost as flat as a bed. Second, a rainfly can be suspended above the hammock. And, third, most hammocks have integrated mesh netting for bug protection.
